Ask a Ninja

Introducing to you what is more than likely something that many of you have never seen, is the outrageous outtakes of “Ask a Ninja” (Beatbox Giant Productions, 2005; 2006). What absurd comedians contrived this concept is beyond me. The fact that to-date the many episodes of this show have captured more than 80,000,000 views on the net worldwide is downright astounding. The show is really just the off-color banter of a guy, who you never really know who it is, dressed in the black and obvious garb of a ninja fighting warrior—an overused concept at best—but one that makes for a comedic approach to a Denis Leary styled entourage that aims to tackle stupid questions, celebrity statements, companies, conspiracy theories and you name it. They talk smack about anything and everything and anybody—or any place for that matter.

The most recent webisode that they are airing “Question 65 Floor Plans” offers a look deep inside this wondrous comedy short series that does not really involve all that much when you take a good look at it. Hosted by a ninja in a ninja outfit, who tries to talk with an Asian accent, but comes off sounding like a gringo—the ninja exhibits flailing hand movement and ridiculous body language as he rants and raves about really whatever is on his mind. While this episode is supposed to be outtakes from many user-posed questions, it really just comes across more as vibrant and vagrant smack-talking that is not really relevant to one particular point and is never backed by fact or educated opinion—no wonder millions of people like it.

The thing about ranting and raving in this country is that it is popular, as has been shown before us with the likes of many people, including our captivating and neo-eccentric ninja friend, as depicted in these many short webisodes. It does not surprise me at all that these videos have gained so much popularity—I just wonder why, when they are really not about anything. Then again, neither was NBC’s “Seinfeld” and look where that went. The camera working is shoddy, almost on purpose, the acting, what acting, but when it comes to ranting on about seemingly meaningless subjects at end—where frequently the topic becomes muddled into another topic as the ninja master continues his Latin-flavored, non-Asian, equivocal tirade—it still comes off as somehow dumbly entertaining and who knows why?
